THE YOUNG COUPLE WHO HAD BEEN KICKED OUT OF CAMP LIBERTY, JERAD and Amanda Miller, were mostly forgotten.
They moved back to Las Vegas, where they stayed in a friend’s apartment. On June 7, 2014, almost two months after the Bunkerville standoff, Jerad posted on Facebook: “The dawn of a new day. May all of our coming sacrifices be worth it.”
The next morning, in a shopping plaza northeast of the Vegas Strip, Jerad walked into a Cicis pizza restaurant and glanced around. Two Las Vegas Metro officers were in a booth, on lunch break. Jerad ducked back outside, and then returned, joined by Amanda. The pair walked past the officers. Jerad pulled out a handgun and shot Officer Igor Soldo, age thirty-one, in the head. Soldo slumped over and didn’t move again.
The other officer, Alyn Beck, age forty-one, yanked out his service weapon, but Jerad shot him in the throat. And then Amanda pulled out her own Smith & Wesson 9-millimeter handgun, and both she and Jerad fired several shots into Beck.
Jerad and Amanda pulled the officers’ bodies out of the booth and onto the floor and took their service weapons and ammunition. They draped a yellow Gadsden flag on Beck’s body. Then they used a swastika pin to fasten a note onto Soldo’s body: “The revolution is beginning.”
They walked out of the restaurant, grabbed their backpacks, and crossed a busy street to a Walmart, both holding their handguns by their sides. A few steps ahead of Amanda, Jerad entered the store, yelling about a revolution, and fired a warning shot into the ceiling. Shoppers jumped, scrambling toward the exit. A thirty-one-year-old man named Joseph Wilcox went against the crowd, following Jerad and grabbing for his own gun, which was stuffed in the back of his pants.
Jerad headed for the sporting-goods section, Amanda pushing a shopping cart about twenty feet behind him. Wilcox passed Amanda, apparently not realizing she was with Jerad, and ducked into an aisle. Amanda extended her arm with the gun and shot Wilcox in the ribs. He collapsed.
Jerad grabbed a baseball bat, walked behind the firearms counter, and smashed the glass on the ammunition cabinets. He tossed ammunition boxes until he found the one he wanted.
One five-officer Metro team entered the rear of the store, and another entered the front. One officer commandeered the security room, radioing information to the other officers about the Millers’ locations. An officer spotted Amanda, and they exchanged shots. Jerad dropped his bag and joined in.
Amanda was hit. Blood soaking through her tank top, she lay sprawled on the floor in the auto-parts corner of the store, a pile of toppled motor-oil cartons around her. Jerad grabbed his backpack and slipped on a puddle of motor oil. He regained his footing, pulled out a bottle of water, and tossed it to Amanda.
An officer took a shot, and Jerad went down to the floor. Amanda pointed her gun at Jerad, then back at herself, then back at her husband. Lying on his belly,
